Union Budget 2025: Finance Minister Unveils Plan Expansion Of IITs & Medical Colleges In The Country

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's Union Education Budget 2025 allocates ₹500 crore for an AI Center of Excellence in Education. Five post-2014 IITs will expand for 6,500 more students, and 10,000 PM Research Fellowships will support IIT and IISc students.

Today, February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled the Union Education Budget 2025. She declared in her eighth budget that 500 crore will be spent to establish a Center of Excellence in AI for Education.

IIT expansion in the country

This year, IITs will also be expanded. Five IITs that were founded after 2014 will get more infrastructure to support the education of an additional 6,500 students. The FM also mentioned that hostel and infrastructure facilities at IIT Patna will also be expanded.

"IITs' capacity will be increased." Over the last ten years, the total number of students enrolled in the 23 IITs has grown by 100%, from 65,000 to 1.35 lakh. In order to accommodate 6,500 extra students, the five IITs founded after 2014 will build more infrastructure. Sitharaman stated, "IIT Patna's hostel and other infrastructure capacity will also be expanded."

Research fellowships to IIT & IISc

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman declared in the 2025 Budget that the Centre would award 10,000 PM Research Fellowships to IIT and IISc Bangalore students. These scholarships, which aim to promote cutting-edge research and innovation in prestigious universities, come with increased financial support.
