Hyderabad: An unidentified person with an AK 47 opened fired at a top industrialist in the posh and busy locality of Banjara Hills on Wednesday morning. K Nityananda Reddy, vice chairman of Aurobindo Pharma, one of the leading pharmaceutical companies, fortunately escaped unhurt. The police are investigating the matter and probing the motive behind the attack.

According to police, the industrialist and his brother had come to the park for a morning walk in their Audi SUV. While Prasad Reddy already got down from the car and began hi stroll, Nityananda was a bit late in getting down as he was searching for something in the car.

Exactly, at this point, the gunman entered the car, pushed Nityananda into the vehicle and pointed the gun at him. He even told the industrialist that he is being kidnapped. But suddenly the AK 47 went off with a bang and Prasad Reddy, who was close by, rushed to the SUV and caught hold of the assailant. But the gunman bit Prasad’s hand and fled. In the melee, the assailant left his AK 47 and a bag in the car.

“In the scuffle the assailant pressed the trigger. Eight rounds were fired,’’ a police official said.

There was an eyewitness to the incident; the person was cycling on the other side of the road when he heard a few shots. When he looked up, he saw the scuffle.

The AK 47 found at the spot went missing from the possession of a Grey Hounds team in Visakhapatnam in December 2013. Surprisingly, a case of missing weapon was not lodged.
