Mumbai : Destiny seems to have smiled again at 16-year-old Noman Sabuwala who lost his father in a freak accident on the Eastern Freeway on May 9. The boy’s family had gone for an outing to celebrate Noman’s success in the SSC exam. However, their happiness didn’t last for long as the Audi of an allegedly drunk woman rammed into the taxi they were travelling in, which led to his father’s immediate death and landed his two sisters and mother on the hospital bed. Noman too had got injured in the freak mishap.

While all the other SSC students were applying for college admission, Noman was performing his father’s last rites – the story that The Free Press Journal carried on June 11 (For Noman, moment of joy didn’t last for long).

After the story was published, Hassaram Rijhumal College of Commerce and Economics offered him admission on humanitarian grounds.

Pooja Kothari, an ex-student of the HR College, approached this reporter to get Noman’s contact details so that she can help him with admission. While Noman has secured 65 per cent marks in his SSC exams, the college that usually offers admissions to students with 90+ per cent marks, admitted him to the commerce stream and that too without making him go through the hassles of online procedure and merit-based selection.

An elated Noman thanked FPJ saying, “If it wasn’t for The FPJ, my story would not have reached the principal of HR College. She was very compassionate towards me and said she has gone through a similar incident as well.”

Hafeeza Sabuwala, Noman’s mother who is still recovering from her injuries in Saifee Hospital, was teary eyed as she thanked the FPJ. “Indu Sahani and The FPJ have been very kind to us. Noman’s father is watching over us. This news has come as a ray of hope for my family after the sad incident.”

Girl who made it happen

Pooja Kothari, an ex-student of HR College who is now a fashion designer, approached The Free Press Journal and simultaneously got in touch with Dr Indu Sahani, the principal of HR College. She explained Noman’s case to her and Dr Sahani immediately obliged. In eight hours flat, Noman was the student of one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the city.
