The Rail Wheel Factory (RWF), Yelahanka, a premier unit of Indian Railways, specializes in the manufacture of cast wheels, forged axles, and wheelsets. During the financial year 2025-26, the RWF achieved a landmark performance by surpassing all previous production records across its core product segments.
Wheel production reached an all-time high of 2,10,026 wheels compared to 2,01,150 wheels in the previous year, registering 4% growth. Axle production witnessed a remarkable surge, with output increasing to 1,22,000 axles, reflecting 30% growth. This significant rise underscores substantial improvements in production capacity, operational efficiency, and optimal resource utilisation.
Similarly, wheelset production recorded a strong performance, reaching 1,20,100 wheelsets, up from 98,350 in the previous year, marking a 22% growth. This achievement highlights enhanced integration of manufacturing processes and overall operational excellence.
With these accomplishments, the RWF has exceeded the production targets set by the Railway Board across all product categories. Notably, these achievements were realised despite challenges such as disruptions in commercial fuel supply arising from geopolitical disturbances in West Asia.
In line with its commitment to sustainability, the RWF has implemented environmentally responsible practices such as the thermal sand reclamation plant, which enables recovery and reuse of foundry sand, significantly minimising environmental impact. Additionally, major heating equipment like heat treatment furnaces operate on piped natural gas (PNG), a comparatively less carbon-intensive fuel.
As an energy-intensive plant, the RWF has undertaken several innovative measures to optimise energy consumption. A notable initiative is the proposed installation of a piped daylighting system to enhance natural illumination on the shop floor, thereby reducing dependence on artificial lighting and conserving energy. These achievements have been supported by digital initiatives, modernisation of machining lines, and the efforts of the workforce.
