Northeast Frontier Railway has been actively observing World Environment Day 2026 through a series of awareness programmes and environmental protection activities across all its divisions and units from 15th May, 2026. The observance, which will continue till 5th June, 2026, is being conducted under the theme “Climate Change”, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation, sustainable practices and collective responsibility towards safeguarding the planet for future generations.
As part of the ongoing campaign, programmes including plantation drives, cleanliness campaigns, awareness rallies, seminars and eco-friendly initiatives are being organized throughout the NFR network to promote environmental sustainability and conservation awareness among railway employees, passengers and the general public.
Special emphasis is being laid on reducing plastic usage, maintaining cleanliness at railway stations and railway colonies, water conservation and adoption of green practices in railway operations. Railway officials, staff members, students, scouts and guides, along with members of social organizations, are actively participating in the awareness drive.
In a significant outreach initiative, Nukkad Natak highlighting environmental protection, cleanliness and the harmful effects of plastic pollution were performed by the NFR Scouts and Guides at the NFR Headquarter, Maligaon. The performances drew attention from passengers and the public, spreading awareness on the need for collective environmental responsibility.
To encourage eco-friendly practices, jute bags, cloth bags and biodegradable items are also being distributed among passengers, railway staff and local residents across different locations under the NFR jurisdiction. These initiatives aim to discourage the use of single-use plastics and promote sustainable alternatives in daily life.
Northeast Frontier Railway has consistently undertaken various eco-friendly measures and remains committed towards sustainable and environment-friendly railway operations in the Northeast region.
The observance will culminate on World Environment Day on 5th June, 2026 with special programmes, awareness activities and administration of an environmental pledge across all divisions and units of NFR.
