How are you with the media?
We are good friends! It’s all chilled out. When out there, I am aware that they are doing their job. If you think about it really, they are the ones who are making you who you are. They are the ones who put you in the limelight. Yes there is the question about personal space etc, but it is nothing that you are not aware of when you decide to become an actor.
Given you are someone who is fairly aware of how nasty press can get…
I won’t lie, it did affect me. I initially thought that media only glorified actors, but things got really dark. I was made to realise that out here you have got to be really thick-skinned. At the end of the day, an actor is like a caged animal, for people to come see, analyse and make their own judgements. Now that I have received my instructions as to how to deal with the media I am good. I need a manual; once I have that, I am good with following instructions.
I will tell you this, the best feeling is when you are the underdog and you come up at the top. ‘Heropanti’ was a huge grosser, ‘Baaghi’ got bigger… they wrote me off, each time. First it was my look, then they said ‘Baaghi’ was a same old story, to which I agree. It was a simple film but all we wanted to do was show action which was out of the world, which we did. We never said it was something else, then why all that talk? However, at the end of it, we got our numbers.
Now with FLYING JATT, they have criticised the costume, said it is looking like ‘Krrish’ – which is a big compliment.

You sure do have your manual intact, nothing anyone says matters anymore, does it?
All I have to say is, write me off, shoot me down – I will keep coming back with my work. When I walk out and see people wanting to take a picture, give me a hug, that’s what matters. Not the rubbish that is being said. It is not putting my stardom down. And quite frankly, stardom is what we are working for…
Fame! Is that all that matters?
To each his own but I know it comes at a price. I know our lives get magnified, crucified, but that’s how I have chosen to make my living.
