Adventurous and spirited, he believes in exploring the nature beyond. An actor with sheer humility and courtliness, he is an incomparable persona of the Indian television. Talking exclusively with The Free Press Journal, Siddhant Karnick opens up about his intimacy with the nature, revolution in the Indian daily soaps and more…
Generation leaps in daily soaps tend to lose the essence of the character as it disturbs the connection of the audience with an already established character, what is your outlook about the same?
To answer this question, one must understand as to why the shows take generation leaps. One of the reasons is that they want more ratings. The makers are not happy with what is happening and try twists in plots to get a hike in their TRP’s. After they’ve exhausted all their tracks and twists the only thing they can then think about is take a generation leap. That is why generation leap happens to spike up TRP’s if the show is not doing as good as they wanted to.
Now, there are pros and cons to that. The con is that the audiences take some time to reconnect with the characters already established or make it use to a certain kind of drama that the TV show is offering. With new characters coming in with the new sort of setting or backdrop, it will take some time because it’s a sort of new show with some sort of similarity. All the characters have changed or the main leads have changed. That could be good or bad, as it depends on the channel and the production house on the risk that they take.

The pro is that television and narratives becomes a lot faster. Indian television has always seen shows being stretched for years and years and we get bored and fed up hoping them to do something new. For an instance with my show, these generation leaps which happens in 9-10 months, it takes the narrative lot more forward and quicker that’s why the pace of the TV shows increases. Makers are always trying to do something new and something different. It’s a pro and con to each.

What made the show makers to bring generation leap and part ways with you?
Sphere, Zee TV and myself had a fantastic relation. There was a need to bring the leap because they were not getting the ratings that they wanted and as a professional actor I understand that. Its pure business and I understand that business module. They were very nice and professional about it and so was that from my end. I think that we left in a very good point.
I know Sphere and the makers were very glad and thankful for me being the part of the project and vice-versa. They’ve also said incase if something else works out in the future they’ll look forward to work and I too look forward to work with the production house because they are among one of the very few extremely professional production house that I’ve come across. They are very good with their timings, they don’t go over schedule, they respect an actor and the money comes on time. These are the main three things that one looks out for and Sphere is absolutely great with that.
How was it working with the small screen’s big star Drashti Dhami?
I think she has created an identity for herself and it is because of that very reason it is fantastic to be working with her. One spends more time with them than own family when shooting for daily soaps. It is extremely important that people with whom one is working with are down to earth and one gets along with them. Drashti is one of those people.
She is a big star in television but she never makes one feel that way, as a result we and the entire cast became very good friends. We looked forward to going to work and not only to do work but also to meet each other as well. It is said that the family which eats together stays together. During lunch time all of us used to always get together to eat and share and that strengthened the bond.
Drashti, Anita ji, myself and everybody used to sit together to have lunch. The vibe on the set was superb because of the same. Very positive and very good vibe was created. Believe in me, there was no politics or ego. It was a fantastic experience working with her.

What are you doing post Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani?
I am chilling (chuckles). I finally got some time to relax and enjoy the time off. Traveling and working on a theatre project as of now, so I’ve always found in my career that I keep switching mediums. I do television for a while, theatre for a while and meanwhile If I come across any film then I do that as well and then I get back to television. I seemed to be in that cycle right now.
Which is your favourite destination?
Anywhere that my motorcycle would take me. When I rode to Ladakh on my bike it was one of the most beautiful destinations that I could ever imagine. When I rode down south couple of days before to Bandipur tiger reserve and Udaipur, it was beautiful. Riding across through Rann of Katch is beautiful as well. The journey for me on my motorcycle is my favourite destination.
What would be your ideal date?
My ideal date for my date and myself would be to get on my motorcycle early in the morning before sunrise. We ride out of this city with these packed sandwiches, refreshments and drinks. Ride off to a place which is in the mountains or covered by shade. Have refreshments, breakfast and whatever carried at the point. Take a dip, hike, trek, walk back, take a snooze somewhere and ride back in the afternoon to Mumbai. That would be my date which combines my love for motorcycles, beautiful destination which is away from all the hustle bustle of the city. One can have a nice intimate conversation without any interruption and with Mother Nature for company.
