Mumbai :The alleged rape of a five-year-old girl in Talegaon near Trimbakeshwar triggered furious protest across Nashik district that kept boiling since Saturday, the day of incident. However, the police said the situation is under control now.
The Deputy Police Superintendent (Rural) Nashik S. Walwi, who is also the investigating officer in the case, told The Free Press Journal that the ‘accused has confessed to his crime’.
The accused, who is a 15-year-old street urchin, first tried to lure victim’s seven-year-old elder sister who did not come in his trap. So the accused then offered her money to buy cold drink and meanwhile, he took the five-year-old victim to a secluded place behind a temple and allegedly raped her.
The victim narrated the whole incident to her mother, who later lodged a complaint against the boy who is the son of a farmer. The incident sparked anger among villagers, who thronged the Nashik Civil Hospital demanding the victim be examined by a lady doctor.
In a bid to vent out their ire against the law enforcement agencies, many people took to streets to protest whereas many resorted to violent agitations like burning the state transport buses, damaging government establishments, assaulting on duty police officials, etc.
The protestors blocked many arterial roads and highways including Nashik-Trimbakeshwar Road, Mumbai-Agra National Highway. The tyres were also burnt at few places by the protestors.
The security has been tightened across Nashik, where the State Reserve Police Forces have been deployed at prominent places to control the deteriorating law and order issue in the district.
Nashik District Superintendent of Police (rural) Ankush Shinde told the situation is under control and peaceful. Over four dozen people have been arrested till Monday evening and booked under serious penal offences, said Shinde.
“Today the situation is absolutely peaceful. Normal traffic is there on highway and no untoward incident of any kind has been reported at district level. The state reserve police forces have been deployed to tight the security level, especially in the villages where the communal kind of simmering tension was there,” said Shinde.
“Yesterday (Sunday) we fired few rounds to disperse the protestors who had resorted to block the road and burning the vehicles. On Sunday seven protestors were detained and today (Monday) we are still in the process to catch the anti-social elements who are trying to bring unrest to the district,” said Shinde.
