Mumbai: Girl drowns in pool, three of housing society booked

Mumbai: A 5-year-old girl drowned in a swimming pool of a residential complex in Thane on Friday evening. The police said her mother had taken the girl Taniya Gupta to the swimming pool where she drowned. Her relative alleged that Taniya died due to the negligence of manager and two employees of the housing complex.

“There are two swimming pools adjacent to each other. The bigger swimming pool is for adults whereas the smaller pool is for kids of the members of housing complex of Palava City. My sister’s body was recovered from the bigger swimming pool whereas she was swimming in the kids’ pool,” Rohit Gupta, cousin brother of deceased told the Free Press Journal. “My aunt had taken her 1.5 month-old toddler and Taniya to the swimming pool on Friday evening. While Taniya was swimming in the pool, my aunt was taking care of her toddler at some distance from the swimming pool. After few minutes, the toddler started running towards the gate and my aunt followed the baby. When she returned to the swimming pool, Taniya was missing. In a panic state of mind, my aunt started to search for her,” added Gupta.

Taniya’s mother enquired with the security guards but she was not found. After few minutes her body was recovered from the bigger swimming pool in which more than a dozen people were present. “She was rushed to nearby Manav Kalyan hospital where the doctor declared her brought dead,” added Gupta.

On Saturday, Taniya’s father registered a case against the manager and two employees of the housing complex Palava City for causing death by negligence. “Investigations are underway,” said Sukhada Narkar, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Thane Police. The investigators are scrutinising the CCTV cameras and have recorded the statements of people present nearby swimming pool.
