15 juveniles escape from rehabilitation home in Hyderabad; one caught by police (Watch video)

Hyderabad: Fifteen inmates of a juvenile home in Hyderabad escaped yesterday after cutting the rods of a ventilator in the bathroom, but one of them was nabbed later, police said. The boys, all in the age group of 14-16, jumped out after cutting the rods, scaled the compound wall and escaped. However, one of them was nabbed later, police said. Following the incident, two security men at the home were suspended by the Telangana government.

The rehabilitation home for juvenile is situated in Saidabad which is near to Hyderabad city. A CCTV footage was found by the police in which all the juveniles were seen leaving the home on Saturday midnight. Reportedly, they used pliers to cut the grille of the window. They were seen going out in groups of two and three and two of them took the motorcycle to escape which were parked around the home.

Initially, the police registered a case of motorcycle theft but later they came to know about the missing juveniles. The magistrate in Saidabad informed that one of the boys has been caught while rest are still missing.  Police revealed that each of the teenagers have more than five cases against them, including robbery and murder.

The juvenile home in Saidabad was overcrowded as one of the nearby home in Nagole was closed down recently. Therefore, many inmates of the Nagole’s juvenile home were shifted to Saidabad centre.  Several news regarding the alleged loopholes of the Saidabad juvenile home also came out in the past. For instance, keeping the boys in barracks, like in a prison. Boys are not allowed to play in the open. Some boys were addicted to drugs and drinking liquor and there are no de-addition programmes for the same.

Earlier, the Saidabad home also came into news following the death of an 11-year-old boy under mysterious circumstances. The reports by leading news channels also claimed that the home does not have round-the-clock supervision.
