World Toilet Summit will aim to achieve open defecation free status

Singapore, October 10th, 2018 – In an endeavor to provide sustainable and affordable sanitation solution in India, World Toilet Organization (WTO), a global non-profit body will be hosting World Toilet Summit in Mumbai, India. With a central theme ‘Can the world be ODF by 2030’ the two-day summit, commencing on November 19, will lay special focus on the evolution and journey of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Officially supported by Government of Maharashtra, the Summit will be inaugurated by Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

The Summit is expected to be an advocacy initiative with a mission to bring sanitation higher on global agenda. With an expected participations of 700 delegates, through the Summit, WTO intends to emphasize on the evolution of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. This will facilitate international stakeholder discussions and policy interventions by bringing government, corporate and civil society on one global platform. With an objective to bring behavioral change in terms of usage and proper maintenance of toilets, reaching 100% WASH coverage in households and schools and emphasize role of design and innovations through alleviating WASH challenges, the Summit will also include major discussion on funding innovation to sustain the ODF status.

Excited to be the host in India, Mr. Jack Sim, Founder, World Toilet Organization, said, ‘The risks associated with open defecation are not just restricted to diseases. Hence, it is important that everyone contributes and tries to make the country open defecation free. To achieve the 100% open defecation free, it is essential to launch a comprehensive behavioral change strategy that focuses on changing the mindset of people and also provide sustainable solution for easy access. We are certain that the Summit will be an effective to address current sanitation challenges in India and the world.”

The Summit is hosted in collaboration with LIXIL, Dettol Banega Swachh India, Merino Laminates and Ecosan Services Foundation and will be witnessing participation from various stakeholders including government representatives, international institutions, industry experts and other development organizations. Along with insightful discussions and keynote lectures from renowned public figures, the summit aids as a global platform for participants to present their latest work and provide solution for ODF status.
