After a two-day break, petrol and diesel prices in the country were hiked again by state-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) on Friday. The hike -- 18th this month -- pushed petrol and diesel prices to all-time high levels across the country.

Petrol price was increased by 27 paise per litre and diesel by 28 paise a litre, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers.

After today’s hike, petrol prices in Delhi rose to Rs 94.76 per litre against Rs 94.49 on Thursday, while diesel price soared to Rs 85.66 per litre as compared to Rs 85.38 a litre on Thursday.

Rates have been increased across the country and differ from state to state depending on the incidence of value-added tax.

In Mumbai, the price of petrol and diesel stood at Rs 100.98 and Rs 92.99 per litre respectively.

The price of petrol and diesel in Chennai was Rs 96.23 and Rs 90.38 per litre respectively and Rs 94.76 and Rs 88.51 per litre in Kolkata.

Moreover, the petrol rates had already crossed the Rs 100-mark in several cities of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Fuel prices differ from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes such as VAT and freight charges. Rajasthan levies the highest value-added tax (VAT) on petrol in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The increase in Tuesday is the 17th increase in prices since May 4, when state-owned oil firms ended an 18-day hiatus in rate revision they observed during assembly elections in states like West Bengal. In 18 increases, petrol price has risen by Rs 4.36 per litre and diesel by Rs 4.93.
