The much-awaited Trump tariffs have officially been unveiled by US president Donald Trump. While speaking at the famous Rose Garden in the White House, Trump, one after the other displayed giant cards with countries and the amount of tariffs on them one after the other.

Canada Missing?

Interestingly, this jumbo list of about 100 countries had a few missing names. The countries that did not make it to this particular list include Canada, Mexico, China, North Korea, and even Russia.

Does this mean that Canada is out of the purview of this tariff war? Well not necessarily. The US, in one of its first major moves since Trump's accession to power, had imposed a flat 25 per cent tariff on Canada, along with Mexico. These tariffs were first put on hold until March and then until April 2.

Canada PM Reacts

The new Canadian prime minister Mark Carney, who replaced Justin Trudeau, has shared his fresh reaction to the major development.

The Tariff Web

In a post on X, Carney shared a video in which he said, "We are going to fight these tariffs with countermeasures, we are going to protect our workers and we are going to build the strongest economy in the G7. In a crisis it's important to come together and it's essential to act with purpose and with force and that's what we will do."

Previously, in addition to the blanket tariffs, Canada, one of the United States's closest allies, was also hit with sector-specific tariffs, including a 25 per cent tariff on automobiles and another set of tariffs on steel and aluminium. These are some of Canada's biggest industries that are dependent on the US markets.
