Actress Amruta Subhash, who has impressed the audience with her acting skills in Gully Boy and Sacred Games, among others, will next be seen as a protagonist in Saas Bahu Achaar Pvt Ltd. It will premiere digitally on July 8. The Free Press Journal caught up with the actress for an exclusive chat.
Based in Chandni Chowk, the show revolves around Amruta’s character Suman, a housewife who embarks on an ambitious journey to become an entrepreneur.
Amruta shares, “It was amazing. I was fortunate that the makers gave me the full script to decide whether or not I should do the character. This is the first time I’m playing a protagonist in a show. I just fell in love with every character. Suman is not very literate. She is from a protected environment, not knowing the world. Her world is her family, and suddenly she loses her world completely.”
Elaborating further, she adds, “Suman literally has to start from scratch, and the only thing she knows is making achaar. Her greatest support in life is her mother-in-law, and that’s a very unique relationship in the show. So with her mother-in-law as her business partner, she does wonders.”
Amruta is completely different from Suman. “I’ve seen many women like her. Suman has never come out of the kitchen, and I have never entered the kitchen. I was always focused on my career and had freedom. But I have seen women who have to take pallu all the time and be in the kitchen. They can’t go out and always speak in a low voice. I salute and respect those women whose lives are for others, and Suman is such a woman,” she explains.
Sharing her experience of working with co-star Annup Sonii, Amruta gushes, “He is amazing. We are sharing a stressed relationship on screen, but off-screen, we became good friends. He is my senior from the National School of Drama, so we had many things to chat about. I had many things to learn from Anuup because his zubaan, his speech is so amazing. He has a very calm presence. He kept on giving me confidence. Annup is exactly opposite of his character.”
Lately, Amruta has played different kinds of roles in films and web series. She says it has always been a conscious decision to take up versatile roles. “I don’t want to get bored by playing the same kind of role again and again. I don't like doing the same thing again and again in terms of acting. I like variations. I say no to similar kinds of characters. I am always attracted to good content, and I wait for good content. This is the first time I'm playing a protagonist in a show but earlier I have never seen the length of the show if the content is good. It is great to play a protagonist because then you have different shades to portray. But a good protagonist with good content is an ideal combination which this show has offered to me,” she says.
Amruta is happy with the opportunities she is getting. "I believe this is the best time for a female actor. I got to play different kinds of roles. Saas Bahu Achaar Pvt Ltd is the story of a woman created by some wonderful men and I'm fortunate to have worked with male directors who have understood women so well," she shares.
Asked which actor she would like to team up with in the future, Amruta says, "In the future, I'm working with some amazing and great female directors. You'll get to know more about it soon. I have been proud to have worked with some of the best actors and best talent in India. But I would love to work with Meryl Streep someday. I love her. I want to see her work closely. Also, I would love to play an action heroine. I'm a fitness freak and I want to do something that explores that side of me, which is maybe an action film," she concludes.
