Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): A daily wage labourer asked the government to link liquor sales with Aadhaar cards and limit the daily purchase to just two quarters per person on Tuesday in Gwalior.

The labourer made the peculiar appeal during a public hearing on Tuesday — asking the government to limit liquor sales by linking them to Aadhaar cards.

Rajendra Kumar Negi, a resident of Gol Pahadiya, told officials that many labourers like him earn around ₹600 a day but spend ₹400–₹500 on alcohol, leaving very little for their families.

“I used to drink a lot too, but I’ve quit now. Still, I see others wasting their hard-earned money. Their families barely get ₹100–₹200 to survive,” he said.

Rajendra proposed that liquor shops be allowed to sell only two quarters per person per day, and that Aadhaar cards be used to monitor and enforce this limit. “If such a rule is made, families will save atleast 70% wage money for the family, and there will be happiness at home, like Diwali or Eid,” he said emotionally.

His suggestion surprised SDM Vinod Singh, who was holding the hearing. The SDM called the Excise Department officer on the spot to discuss the idea. The officer appreciated Rajendra’s concern and said the matter would be looked into.

Rajendra also requested that his idea be sent to the state government for serious consideration, hoping it could bring change to the lives of thousands of struggling families.
