Morena (Madhya Pradesh): A tragic incident was reported from Madhya Pradesh's Morena, after a mother-daughter duo were swept away in the raging current of the Ganges while celebrating Guru Purnima in Rishikesh on Thursday.

The incident unfolded in the ghats of Ganga river where Manu Upadhyay accompanied by her 6-year-old daughter Gauri Upadhyay, resident of Morena's Kailaras went to take a dip in the holy river.

Child lost her balance due to strong water current

According to the information, Manu after taking her bath was sitting on the bank of the ghats and asked her daughter to take a holy dip in the water. In a moment of misfortune, the child lost her balance because of the raging currents in the river began to drift away.

In an attempt to save her child, Manu jumped into the water and got hold of her hands. Unfortunately, due to strong water current they both were swept away in lap of Ganges.

Locals rushed to rescue

According to eyewitnesses, locals rushed to rescue the mother-daughter duo but by then both of them were drifted away in the fast flowing water. Onlookers were left helpless after seeing them being swept away in front of their eyes.

As soon as the information about the incident was received, the SDRF team reached the spot and conducted a search operation throughout the day, but the bodies of both could not be found till late Wednesday evening.

According to reports, Ramniwas Upadhyay, his son Manish, daughter-in-law Manu and granddaughter Gauri all from Morena's Kailaras were staying at Saint Dayaram Maharaj's Swarg Ashram in Rishikesh on the occasion of Guru Purnima.

The family had intended to worship the Guru and take a bath in the Ganga, but this religious journey turned into the painful death of the mother and daughter.
