Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Traders from Anand Nagar staged a protest rally on Sunday against the Bhopal Municipal Corporation's (BMC) sealing drive and notices issued to commercial establishments operating in residential areas, warning that the action could put businesses and livelihoods at risk.
The rally began at Anand Nagar intersection, where traders raised slogans including 'Save Business, Save Jobs' and urged the government to expedite implementation of Bhopal's new Master Plan. They demanded a practical policy for areas where commercial activities have been operating for several years.
Trader leader Anand Soni said many establishments have been functioning for years and provide employment to a large number of people. He said sudden sealing action could force businesses to shut down, affecting not only traders but also employees dependent on these establishments.
The traders demanded that the government provide for mixed land use in areas identified for commercial activity under the Master Plan. They also sought a clear mechanism to regularise old unauthorised developments, citing the policy adopted in Gujarat as a possible model.
The protesters said enforcement should comply with court directives while also protecting livelihoods. They warned of intensifying their agitation if the government fails to address their demands soon.
Civil society seeks balanced policy
Amid the ongoing sealing drive, 'Voice of Bhopal', a civil society group for social and sustainable development of the state capital, has urged the Madhya Pradesh government and also approached Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to formulate a balanced, practical and time-bound policy on commercial activities, encroachments and illegal constructions in residential areas.
