BHOPAL : A day after its embarrassing drubbing in urban body elections, Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee demanded judicial enquiry into three-phase civic elections, alleging that MP State Election Commission rigged the poll to favour the ruling BJP and to benefit the bettors.
In a press conference, MPCC spokesman KK Mishra said “We accept the people’s mandate. But certain things indicate that efforts were made to weaken democracy. Bureaucrats posted in the state election commission tried to favour the ruling BJP.”
He demanded to ban EVMs in polling questioning that how EVMs could be tamper-proof when electronic meter in auto-rickshaws and electronic vending machine at petrol pumps could be tampered with easily.
In the support of his allegations, Mishra said the commission repaired 10,000 EVMs just before polling. Why the new EVMs developed problems, should be probed. Their numbers and from where they were used, should be made in public, he added. He said, election officials in Bhopal brought postal ballots a day before counting to Navin Vidyalaya, Tulsi Nagar from strong room. Seals in some voting machines were found broken and on them, last polling date was February 2. On the rear side of strong room number four, broken seals of EVMs were found burnt, he said.
