Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): With Swachh Survekshan-2024 just around the corner, Bhopal's Mayor Helpline is currently grappling with over 200 unaddressed sewage-related complaints.
This could potentially affect the city's cleanliness rating in the upcoming survey.
In all 200 marks out of a total of 12,500 marks are allocated for the clean and well-maintained sewage system. Bhopal is at risk of losing valuable points due to these pending issues.
The complaints are categorized into three types: First -Sewage Block (105 complaints pending); Second- Sewage Block (52 new complaints) and thirdly Sewage Repair under which 45 complaints are pending. To address this situation, Mayor Malti Rai has instructed RK Trivedi, Executive Engineer of Bhopal Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Sewage department to expedite the resolution of these complaints. As Bhopal prepares for the cleanliness survey, the municipal authorities are working to clear these pending complaints to ensure a cleaner and more robust sewage system in the city.
RK Trivedi talking to Free Press said efforts are being made to address the sewage-related issues regularly. He also mentioned that the number of pending complaints has significantly reduced from around 800 in 2023 to around 200 currently.
However, Trivedi pointed out that there are various factors contributing to the persistent sewage blockages. He noted that the public tendency to dump garbage into drains and sewers is majorly leading to the issue.
Additionally, theft of PVC pipes used for sewage connections, especially from buildings and multi-story apartments, has worsened the situation. The official emphasized that lack of public awareness remains a major challenge in resolving these issues.
