One Girl Drowns, Two Rescued After Being Swept Away While Bathing In Sheopur’s Seep River

Sheopur (Madhya Pradesh): One girl died after being swept away by the strong current of the Seep river in Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur district on Wednesday.

The incident occurred when three girls from Soinkala village, Meenakshi, Shivani, and Garima, entered the river to bathe.

Two were rescued safely by the locals.

Search operations continued for several hours before her body was finally recovered. The incident has left the village in deep shock and sorrow.

According to the police, the girls lost their balance due to the slippery riverbed and were carried away by the fast-flowing water. Hearing their cries for help, locals rushed to the spot and managed to rescue two of them safely. However, one girl could not be saved.

However, a youth from the village valiantly jumped into the river and managed to pull out Meenakshi and Shivani out of the water. Unfortunately, Garima went missing in the strong current of the river.

According to police station in-charge Shashi Tomar, Garima’s body was recovered downstream after a 6-houyr long rescue operation.

Intense rainfall in the district has affected the daily lives of people

The tragedy unfolded amid heavy rainfall in Sheopur since the last two days. Due to the continuous rains, an average of 111.8 mm rainfall has been recorded in the district.

Meanwhile, the district recorded 119.32 mm of rain on July 13. The maximum impact of the rain was seen in the Baroda area, where 174 mm rainfall was recorded.

Due to the heavy downpour, overflowing drains have caused waterlogging in markets, homes, and even the Community Health Center, disrupting medical services and forcing patients and staff to wade through waterlogged premises.

Administration have urged the people to avoid going near any waterbodies and low lying area amid intense rain in the district.
