Khandwa : The Omkareshwar irrigation project is proving to be a boon for villagers and cattle of Nimad region. The irrigation canal has been proving to be a saviour for local farmers and for the cattle over here.
The water level of the Omlareshwar Dam increased on demand of the local farmers and water supply was initiated on April 12. The irrigation canal which is 64 kilometres long would be used for cultivation of 1 lakh hectare land in the region.
While the water level of the region has improved the water levels of wells and handpumps, some small water bodies too have come on the sides of the canal.
It is to be noted that the temperature levels in Nimad have increased to as high as 46 degrees, but even then proper water supply has increased the confidence level of the farmers, who, in the past used to fight the odds to ensure proper water supply for their fields. Now the cattle get enough water to drench themselves in the near by ponds during the summer. The confident farmers too are preparing themselves to cultivate crops such as chillies, moong, cotton and vegetables. It is believed that four lakh quintal chilly would be produced this year in the region.
