Bhopal/Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): A Non-Resident Indian (NRI) couple traveling in the AC coach (A-1) of Shri Dham Express fell victim to theft, and ended up losing gold jewelry worth Rs 25 lakh, US dollars. The incident occurred on the night of February 5 between Datia and Gwalior but was discovered only after the train had passed Gwalior station.

The theft was discovered when the woman woke up at Gwalior station and found her purse open with valuables missing. She immediately informed the train staff before filing an FIR upon reaching Delhi.

According to information, the couple, identified as Kanhaiyalal Shah and his wife, residents of Dwarka, Delhi, were returning from Narmadapuram after attending a family wedding. Upon reaching Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin station, they lodged a complaint with the Government Railway Police (GRP), which later transferred the case to Gwalior GRP for investigation.

According to GRP officials, Shah and his wife were traveling in the reserved berths 7 and 9 of the A-1 coach. While the train was between Datia and Gwalior, thieves managed to open their purse and steal three gold necklace sets, six bangles, three Apple iPhones, an Apple Watch, three gold rings, a mangalsutra, a total of 250 grams of gold jewelry, 80 US dollars, and ₹70,000 in cash. The theft was discovered by Shah's wife upon waking up at the Gwalior station.

Police Investigation

The couple filed an FIR at the Hazrat Nizamuddin GRP station who in turn transferred the case to GRP Gwalior. GRP suspects that professional thieves, who book tickets in AC coaches to target sleeping passengers and escape at the next station, may be behind the theft. Several suspects have been detained for questioning as the investigation progresses.
