Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the State Pollution Control Board to submit a detailed month-wise report on Bhopal’s air quality from 2019 to the present, covering various air quality parameters.

The hearing concerned Bhopal's air quality, environmental management and utilisation of related funds.

Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) submitted a compliance report in accordance with the previous order dated May 20, 2026.

The Municipal Corporation argued that the allocated and received funds had been adequately utilised.

NGT observed that only Rs 12.44 crore, accounting for 21.18% of the funds, was utilised in 2024-25, while there were no details regarding fund utilisation for 2025-26.

Similarly, no details regarding the execution of any works were available for 2023-24.

NGT further noted that BMC failed to provide specific details regarding the rules or provisions under which the funds were utilised and whether such utilisation adhered to the notification concerning fund allocation.

In this regard, the BMC and the State Pollution Control Board (State PCB) have been directed to clarify the position before the next hearing date.

Advocate Harshvardhan Tiwari filed objections regarding the compliance report. He raised various objections concerning BMC's compliance report. NGT has directed that these objections be submitted in writing within two weeks.

Tiwari, representing Rashid Noor Khan (petitioner), emphasised that the utilisation of environmental protection schemes and the public funds allocated for them must align with the intended objectives and applicable regulations, and that factual and transparent compliance is expected from the concerned authorities.
