Shivpuri (Madhya Pradesh): Eighteen hours was all it took for a newlywed groom in Shivpuri district to end his marriage. The man cut off the nuptial ties with his bride after finding out that she belonged to another caste.

The wedding, held with Hindu rituals at a local temple, ended in a police station the next day-- on Tuesday, with both families agreeing to call off the marriage, as the bride hailed from the Yadav caste.

According to information, the groom Dharmendra Rajput, is a farmer from Basai village under Raksa police station limits. His father, Shagun Rajput, said they had difficulty finding a match for him.

A local man introduced them to a girl from Karera tehsil in Shivpuri district, Madhya Pradesh, claiming she belonged to the Lodhi community.

The man demanded ₹50,000 for the match, and the groom’s family paid ₹20,000 in advance.

The girl’s brother, who arranged the marriage, refused to show ID and claimed his Aadhaar card was lost.

On June 27, the couple married at Badi Mata Mandir in Basai. Soon after, the man began demanding the rest of the money.

In a drunken state, he confessed that they were not from the Lodhi caste but Yadav. When questioned, he ran away.

The groom brought the bride to the police station on June 28. Both sides agreed to end the marriage peacefully.

Police advised them to approach the court as no written complaint was filed.
