Police Headquarters (PHQ) is preparing a guideline to transfer police officials above the rank of sub-inspector who have completed their 10 years of service in one district.
The move comes following a recent order of DGP Kailash Makwana to transfer constables, head constables, ASIs, and sub-inspectors who had served more than five years at one police station or within a subdivision. Following this, around 11,000 police personnel were transferred.
After shifting the lower rank personnel, the PHQ has shifted its focus on moving sub-inspectors, inspectors, deputy superintendents of police (DSPs), and additional superintendents of police.
Sources claimed that in a few major cities like Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Rewa, and Satna, some officials have been serving for over 20 years. In certain cases, some officers took transfer to a neighbouring district only to return later to the same district, thereby evading the tag of being ‘long-serving’ in one district.
According to PHQ’s plan, the total term of service of an official in a district will be calculated cumulatively , regardless of transfers, postings, or rank changes. The total term should not be more than 10 years. If an official has completed 10 years in a district, they will be transferred.
Special Director General of Police (administration) Adarsh Katiyar told Free Press that the move is aimed at streamlining police working. “When personnel stay too long at one station, they start manipulating the system and overpowering their colleagues. This is an effort to make the force more accountable and transparent,” said Katiyar.
