Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): In a bid to address public concerns over pollution during the incineration of Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) chemical waste at REEL, Pithampur, the state government has decided to include an agency authorised by the High Court in the monitoring process, alongside the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and MP Pollution Control Board (MPPCB).

The decision comes amidst rising protests regarding pollution level from the incineration of 337 MT of UCC waste.

The state government, in its report, assured that regular monitoring would be conducted by an agency approved by the High Court to ensure transparency and public confidence.

The High Court has granted the state government six weeks to allay public fears and clarify misconceptions following intense opposition to the UCC waste incineration process that began on January 1.

The Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Department (BGTRRD) has already transported the UCC waste to REEL, Pithampur, for incineration. The state government has developed a comprehensive plan to ease public concerns about pollution.

While CPCB and MPPCB will continue to monitor air and water pollution levels, the inclusion of a High Court-authorised agency is an additional measure to ensure independent and reliable oversight.
