Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh): A viral outbreak has been reported among pet cats in Chhindwara district, Madhya Pradesh, leading to the death of more than 80 cats so far. This is the first-ever reported case in the country. Authorities have issued an alert regarding the spread of the virus, suspected to be linked to bird flu.
Following an order by the district collector, a ban has been imposed on the sale of meat, mutton, and eggs in Chhindwara. All related shops have been instructed to remain closed for a month as a precautionary measure.
According to sources, a team from the Pune laboratory has reached Chhindwara to investigate the outbreak. More than 100 samples from infected cats have been collected for testing. Reports suggest that around 100 samples have already been examined to determine the nature of the virus. Officials believe that the virus is spreading in Chhindwara due to its proximity to the Maharashtra-Nagpur border.
However, as of now, there has been no reported transmission of the virus to humans. Dr. Sanjay Mishra, Regional Health Director, confirmed the situation and stated that authorities are closely monitoring developments. Further investigation is underway to control the spread of the infection and determine the potential risk to other animals or humans.
