BHOPAL : Ahead of Assembly poll 2013, State government had withdrawn cases against former BKS leader Shiv Kumar Sharma ‘Kakkaji’ and other, for attempt to murder and violence that was sparked after police firing in Bareli of Raisen district.

Law and legislative department in August 2013 sent a letter to district magistrate of Raisen to withdraw under trial cases against BKS leaders, following instructions from chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan.

RTI activist Ajay Dubey, who disclosed government’s correspondence in this regard on Tuesday, said the government issued order to withdraw cases only to ‘get political mileage in the elections’.

On May 7, 2012, police firing on agitating farmers had led to death of farmer Hari Singh.

Besides filing criminal cases under sections 147, 148, 149, 307, 332, 353 and 427 of IPC against Sharma and other accused, the government set up an enquiry under the then additional chief secretary (Home) IS Dani. The cases were under trial in additional chief judicial magistrate of Bareli when they were withdrawn.

Sources said nine out of ten cases the police registered against agitating farmers, were withdrawn so far. One case is under trial.

Dubey said, the government did not disclose Dani’s report. AK-47 rifles were used in firing and State Human Rights Commission had taken very strong note on the firing on farmers. Dubey said the government did not act against police and district administration officers.
