BHOPAL : The government websites will soon migrate to government servers. Many departments are presently using private servers, which are considered insecure
NIC technical director Sunil Jain informed Free Press that the state government is planning to install security systems to protect official mails and servers hosting government websites from cyber attacks.
The departments have to pay certain amount to the companies owning the servers that host their websites. Some of the server operators are not competent enough to make the website safe and secure from the hackers.
The National Informatics Centre, under the Department of Information Technology of the Government of India has set up state-of-the-art National Data Centres at NIC headquarters in Delhi and at Pune and Hyderabad and 30 small data centres at various state capitals to provide services to the government at all levels. The information uploaded on NIC servers is safe and so are the ongoing and incoming mails. However, almost 60 percent of the government offices are presently using private servers. The information sent through these servers is not safe because the host is often outside the country. If the government officials start using the NIC website to send the e-mails they will be safe.
The government of India has issued the 115-point guidelines for hosting of government sites. It bars government departments from using private servers.
Hacking of websites and mail servers has emerged as a big threat. Every year the number of cases of hacking is increasing. Last year, around 3000 cases of hacking were reported. More than 55,000 e-mails about lotteries, cars, house and other loans have were sent to official mail accounts of government functionaries.
The NIC has means to deal with unsolicited mail and cyber attacks.
By the end of November, the government websites and the e-mailing services will be moved to government servers.
