Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid) was celebrated with religious fervour in the city on Saturday, followed by a massive cleanliness drive led by Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) to manage the slaughter waste responsibly.

After the main morning prayer (namaz), the sacrificial rituals began, and civic teams swiftly moved into action. In all, 91 containers were placed to collect remains, which were transported to a newly-established rendering plant in Adampur cantonment, the first of its kind in Madhya Pradesh.

The rendering plant processes slaughter waste including skin, fat and bones, into high-temperature cooked feed for chickens, cats, and fish. Previously, such waste was buried in the ground.

Over 70 staff members including AHO Asif Nazir prevented waste from entering water bodies, particularly ponds. Teams of Swachhata Mitras led by Imtiaz Khan, went door-to-door urging residents to dispose of remains responsibly.

Mayor Malti Rai highlighted the corporation's efforts, noting that 43 temporary slaughterhouses were set up, and slaughter waste was routed through secondary storage points to Adampur plant. Chemicals were also arranged at key locations to manage bad odour and hygiene.

“This rendering plant is a major step towards sustainable waste management. Not only does it prevent environmental harm but it also turns waste into useful animal feed,” said Rai.

Thousands prayed

Thousands of Muslims offered namaaz and prayed for the safety of the country, justice and protection of Palestinians on Eid-ul-Azha (Bakrid) in the capital city.
