Sagar (Madhya Pradesh): A dead man has won a Panchayat poll held on July 1 riding on a “sympathy wave” generated by his own death. The real-life tragicomedy was detected in Satna district. The incident came to fore before handing over certificates to candidates who won the polls. According to information, Ravindra Singh, had filed his nominations for the post of sarpanch in panchayat election from Kanjera village in Deori block. He, however, died on June 22 due to cardiac seizure more than a week before voting took place on July 1.

The family members of the deceased were supposed to inform 72 hours before the election day regarding the sudden demise of Ravindra Singh so that the ballot papers could be reprinted. But they did not inform the district election office. Strangely, people voted for him despite knowing that he was dead. As a result, the dead man emerged as the winner in the panchayat election. “We are going to write to the State Election Commission with the request that election for the village concerned be nullified and fresh polls be held,” said district election officer Deepak Arya.
