Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Bhopal is set to tackle one of its biggest waste management challenges, with a plan to clear the Adampur landfill within the next 1.5 years. Currently, the city generates around 850 tonnes of waste daily, all of which is being dumped at the Adampur landfill.
In a bid to resolve this issue, Bhopal Collector Kaushalendra Vikram Singh and Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Harendra Narayan, has instructed agencies working on the site to complete the disposal process within a strict timeline.
The waste at the Adampur landfill is being managed through a two-pronged approach: wet waste is being utilised to generate Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), while dry waste is being converted into charcoal. Collector Singh said that BMC’s charcoal plant, which is crucial to the dry waste disposal plan, will begin operations within a month.
Agencies working on the project have been directed to ensure that all activities are completed within the 1.5-year timeframe. The waste management hierarchy, which prioritises prevention, reuse, recycling, and recovery before disposal, is being followed in this initiative. Singh said that resolving the city's waste management issues is a significant challenge for the BMC.
Swachh plan
The waste disposal plan is also critical, as Bhopal gears up for the Swachh Survekshan-2024, where 60% of the total score (5,705 out of 9,500 marks) will be allocated to criteria such as proper disposal, segregation, transportation of waste, legacy waste remediation, and visible cleanliness.
The effective handling of solid waste will play a major role in determining Bhopal's ranking in this prestigious cleanliness survey.
