Bhopal: A 37th foundation-day of Bharat Bhawan began with the performance of Mohan Veena exponent layer Vishwa Mohan Bhatt on Wednesday. The 68-year-old Grammy award winner instrumentalist began his performance with raga ‘Maru Vihag’. In the raga, he presented alap, jod and jhala which won huge round of applauses from audience who present in good number. The hall was full packed with Bhatt lovers.
Before beginning his performance, he praised the audience of the city and termed them as being very good. I would like to perform here again and again, he said. After that, he presented, tune of Rudraveena on Mohan Veena. Bhatt is renowned for his Grammy award winning album A Meeting by the River with Ry Cooder released on Water Lily Acoustics label.
He is also known for other fusion and pan-cultural collaborations with Western artists such as Taj Mahal, Béla Fleck and Jerry Douglas. Exposure such as an appearance on the 2004 Crossroads Guitar Festival, Bhatt came in place tabla maestro Zakir Hussain. Earlier, Hussain used to perform on the inaugural day. But he was unwell so he couldn’t come.
In fact, some fans of Zakir Hussain who were not aware the fact visited the Bhawan for his performance. Besides, the cultural evening began with Manglacharan, presented by Sangeeta Goswami with troupe. A group painting exhibition was also inaugurated on the day. Minister for culture, Vijya Lakshmi Sadho and secretary, culture, Renu Tiwari were present along with art lovers.
