Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Denizens upset by the commercial activities on residential plots are all set for a torchlight march on Saturday in Bhopal. The march will begin from Seva Market in Gulmohar in the evening and will be attended by several areas, including Arera Colony and Bawadiyakalan.

This protest will be held under the banner of the Joint Residents' Struggle Committee. According to the residents, despite Supreme Court directives that effective sealing on illegal commercial constructions must be practised, no actions were taken.

'To-Let' signs on closed stores

They claimed that after the municipal corporation's notice, many commercial establishments themselves posted notices stating they had closed. Residents complained that the Bhopal Municipal Corporation's action was limited to a mere formality as same establishments now have "TO LET" signs, and new tenants are being sought.

According to the residents, on May 20, this year, the Supreme Court directed the city to ensure action against illegal constructions in residential complexes and submit the report. Following this, the Municipal Corporation claimed to have identified a large number of illegal constructions. However, the residents question why these illegal stores were not completely sealed or even razed off.

Now, residents are demanding strict action against these establishments and warning the municipal corporation to "stop the notice game and seal the illegal constructions.”

They complained that large commercial establishments built on residential plots not only affect their peace and security but also create significant pressure on parking, traffic, pollution, and public amenities. However, if the Municipal Corporation continues to issue notices instead of taking effective action, it raises serious questions about the system.
