Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Pothole-studded roads and leftover construction material on roads is posing serious risk to the lives of commuters. Pedestrians and motorists fail to identify potholes when roads are inundated. The roads and streets in residential colonies in Kolar, a satellite township under Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) jurisdiction, are dotted with potholes. Driving on these pothole-ridden roads becomes too risky during rains. The concerned department needs to repair the damaged roads before the onset of monsoon, but no steps have been taken in this direction.

MLA Rameshwar Sharma visited many colonies of the area to take stock of the road condition but the department is still to initiate the road repairing work.

Besides, the delay in re-carpeting the roads after digging it up for laying pipeline and cables has also added to the woes. INfrastructure firms are engaged in laying pipelines, cable on the roads but they fail to repair and re-carpet it once the project is completed. So with a spell of rain, the dug up black soil spread on the road turns slushy and walking or driving on it becomes pretty challenging. Residents blame BMC for delaying the repair work and failing to monitor the construction firms engaged in digging for water pipelines, sewage lines and cables.

Construction firms fail to do repair work

“Ankita construction has dug the roads for laying pipelines but after completing the work it did not do the re-carpeting. Black soil which was dug to lay pipelines still spread all over the approach road. Even light shower, make the approach road to Alisha Vihar muddy.”- Sanjesh Tiwari

Risky driving on pothole-ridden roads

“The condition of the roads here is pathetic and it is risky to drive on pothole-ridden roads. It becomes difficult even to walk on the roads filled with slush after rains. Construction companies have turned good roads into muddy ones as they fail to do the restoration work before the onset of the rainy season.” - Rishi Shrimali

Two-wheelers skid off slushy roads

“Pedestrians slip on the muddy road while crossing. Vehicles, specially two-wheelers, skid off the road as they become slippery due to leftover black soil. We have complained to the BMC administration many times but we only get assurances but the repair work has not yet started. BMC engineers are supposed to monitor construction companies to ensure that all repair and restoration work is complete before monsoon.”- Nitin Malviya

BMC negligent towards repair agencies

“MLA Rameshwar Sharma visited many colonies and assured of immediate road repairing and other construction but so far nothing has been done. BMC has turned blind eye to construction companies who have failed to do their assigned job of road repair.” Punit Maheshwari
