Bhopal: New Year celebrations: 180 revellers challaned for drunken driving

Bhopal: The New Year celebrations saw traffic police keeping a strict vigil on the city streets as round 180 revellers were challaned and their vehicles impounded for drunken driving on Sunday night. Challans were issued against 500 motorist for rash driving and breaking traffic rules on New Year’s eve. Most of the challans were made in New Bhopal area those indulging in drunken or rash driving were mostly students.

Operation against errant revellers continued till 4.00 am and the drive continued even on Monday, however the focus of the authorities was more on city outskirts.

Nearly 100 checkpoints were made across the city to catch hold of errant drivers. Bhopal police checked over 3000 vehicles on New Year eve. Traffic issued challans against 180 persons for drunken driving and also seized their vehicles. While 500 persons were challaned for violating traffic rules. DIG Santosh Singh himself monitored the entire drive.

ASP (traffic) Mahendra Jain said, “ It is for the first time in Bhopal that 180 people have been challaned for drunken driving. Mostly students of New Bhopal specially in Habibganj and Misrod area fell in police net during the drive. Students of various professional colleges were found inebriated condition. So they have been challaned.”
