Bhopal: MP is all set to become the first state in the country to run have government run gausahalas. Kamal Nath government has decided to turn Kanji house (shelter homes) into gaushalas. The onus will be on civic bodies (municipalities and municipal corporations) to manage the show. The state government has plans to open 1000 guashalas in the state.
Additional chief secretary Manoj Shrivastava, who looks after animal husbandry, said, “There is no gaushala run at government level in any state in country in the last 70 years. It will be first time that Madhya Pradesh is opening Gaushala. All the Gaushalas which are being operated in the state level are voluntary level.
Civic bodies have to upgrade their kanji houses (shelter homes) which are so far only penalise the owners of the animals in case animals are rounded up and sent there. Civil bodies—municipalities, municipal corporations—have to play key role in maintaining the Guashalas in the state. So far they are running kanji house.”
In Madhya Pradesh, there are 614 privately owned gaushala. In Bhopal, there are 27 Gaushala. Civil bodies—municipalities, municipal corporations run Kanji Houses (shelter homes) for stray animals. Besides, civic bodies shift dairies to outskirt areas.
So, far civic bodies have only two responsibilities: to run Kanji House and to shift dairy from cities. Before assembly polls, ex-Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan had promised to open Cow Welfare ministry. Madhya Pradesh Goshala Act, 1953, and Kamdhenu Yojana provide for protection of cows in Madhya Pradesh.
