Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): To reduce traffic jams and improve road movement in Bhopal, authorities have decided to ban e-rickshaws from the city’s main roads starting June 20.
These vehicles will now only be allowed in colonies and residential lanes, not on busy roads or intersections.
The collector has also directed SDMs to remove parked vehicles (broken) in a 15-day campaign starting June 20.
Under the new rule, e-rickshaws will be restricted to colonies and local streets. They will not be allowed to pick up passengers or travel on major roads. This system will run for a week, after which a full plan will be reviewed and presented on June 27.
The decision came after a meeting held at the Police Commissioner’s office on Wednesday. MP Alok Sharma, Police Commissioner Harinarayan Chari Mishra, Collector Kaushalendra Vikram Singh, and Municipal Commissioner Harendra Narayan discussed the traffic issues, especially during the rainy season.
Collector Singh informed that a joint drive by the administration, police, and municipal corporation will begin from Friday.
At present, around 1,500 e-rickshaws are registered in Bhopal and operate without fixed routes. Officials believe this move will ease congestion and ensure smoother traffic flow.
The meeting also addressed illegal encroachments on roads and footpaths. A special team led by the ADM will be formed to take action. This team will include police, municipal officers, SDMs, ACPs, and mobile courts with a magistrate.
MP Sharma also raised concerns about broken vehicles parked along roads. The collector has directed SDMs to remove these vehicles in a 15-day campaign starting June 20.
To fix problems at busy crossings, especially left turns, traffic police and road construction agencies will inspect 42 key junctions. If needed, encroachments will be removed and roads redesigned.
Officials say these steps will help reduce jams and make daily travel safer and faster in the city.
