Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Government medical colleges across Madhya Pradesh are facing a severe shortage of pre-clinical and para-clinical senior residents (SR), affecting medical education and forcing Post Graduate (PG) students to seek private assistance for thesis completion.

The Department of Medical Education (DME) has now decided to create 291 SR posts across various government medical colleges to address the crisis.

As per National Medical Commission (NMC) norms, every department in a medical college must have at least four senior residents.

However, several autonomous government medical colleges in MP, including those in Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Rewa, Jabalpur, Sagar, Vidisha, Khandwa, Datia, Chhindwara, Ratlam, Shahdol and Shivpuri, lack these critical posts.

Due to this shortage, PG students often turn to private doctors for thesis completion, and many get absorbed into the private sector, leading to a continuous scarcity of senior residents in government hospitals. Junior Doctors Association (JUDA) president Dr. Kuldeep Gupta said, “NMC mandates at least four SRs in each department of a government medical college.

There are 18 departments, and the absence of SRs affects PG students' training, education and overall medical standards.” Director of Medical Education Dr. A.K. Shrivastava acknowledged the gap and assured action. “Some new medical colleges have SR posts, but older institutions lack them. To resolve this, we are creating 291 SR positions. This will prevent PG students from relying on private doctors, ensuring they remain within the government sector,” he said.
