Bhopal: The state cyber cell of MP police arrested a man accused of duping people by paying cheques of nil-balance bank accounts to the sellers after purchasing items from them through OLX on Wednesday from New Market locality here. The accused made a fake profile on OLX by disguising himself as a woman, police said.

According to the cyber cell police, the accused identified as Abhishek Srivastava was arrested after receiving a complaint of one of his victims, Himashu Verma, a resident of Ashoka Garden locality here. Few days ago the victim had lodged a complaint in the cyber cell against the accused in which he state that he had put an advertisement on OLX to sell his LED television, a DVD player and a home theatre system. After some days he got a message on the advertisement from a woman named Aradhna Shukla in which she expressed her interest in buying the items.

The message further stated that as she is a government employee, she would make the payment in cheque due to income tax issues. It also stated that her husband, Abhishek (the accused) would come to collect the items and hand over the payment cheque to them on which the victim agreed. After few days, the accused came to his address and handed the cheque after buying the items from him. When the victim later put the cheque in bank to encash it, it bounced citing not enough balance in its bank account. He then contacted the accused on his mobile number on the issue but he dilly-dallied and later blocked his number, police added.

“The police during its investigation, traced down the mobile number of the accused and nabbed him near New Market area. On being questioned by the police, he confessed to commit the crime and also confessed of duping other people too. Police after arresting him booked him under relevant sections of IPC and Information Technology Act,” said superintendent of police(cyber cell), Shailendra Singh Chouhan.
