Bhopal: Annual Health Survey report exposes poor condition of kids in state

Bhopal: The recently released Annual Health Survey Report for the year 2014 presented a dreary picture of 18 districts of the state falling under the top 100 districts of nation to have worst child nutrition deprivation index and this makes Madhya Pradesh the third state after Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to have highest levels of child nutrition deprivation.

Not just this, MP also has 21 districts among top 100 with high prevalence of stunting, 20 districts with underweight and 15 districts falling among top 100 districts with high prevalence of wasting.

According to AHS report the 21 districts of state with high stunting have more than 50 per cent of children stunted with highest in West Nimar (71.8%) followed by Sagar (70.5%) and Tikamgarh (67.8%) and this lasts at Shajapur with 54.7 per cent children.

MP also reports the highest inter district range with 44.9 per cent in case of stunting whereas Bihar reports to have the lowest inter district range with 29.4 per cent. Inter district range in wasting, stunting and under weight among children below 3 years is 21 per cent (Ratlam 23.7%- Indore 2%) for wasting, 50.2 per cent (Tikamgarh  56.8% – Satna 6.6%) for stunting and 44.6 per cent (Dewas 50.4% – Indore 5.8%) in underweight category.

Hoshangabad district of the state tops the list of 100 districts with highest prevalence of under nourished children below 5 years of age with 48.7 per cent followed by Ratlam (38.5%), Barwani (37%), Katni (36.6%) among top 10 districts to have under nourished children and 12 other districts.

Not just among children, Madhya Pradesh also marks its presence with 19 districts to have under nourished population in age group of 5-18 years with Umaria at third number among 100 districts with 55.4 per cent population under nourished followed by Sagar having 44.7 per cent and Narsinghpur with 48 per cent. Interestingly, states like Bihar, Uttarakhand, Assam and Chhattisgarh have performed better than MP in child nutritional deprivation index. PS, WCD department, JN Kansotiya said, “We have the latest data of NFHS which shows MP has the highest decrease in malnutrition status in country and it is a positive sign. The Annual Health Survey report is of 2014, the situation has changed and the rest will be known after the next AHS report”.
