Bhopal: In his mid-thirties, Amit Nemade, 41, realized that he was good at handling cameras. Since then, he spent the time left after his 10 to 5 job in clicking pictures. He learned the ropes of the art amazingly fast and within four years, blossomed into an amateur lensman with skills of a thorough professional.

Two photographs clicked by him have been ranked 5th and 10th in “Wiki Loves Monuments- 2017” – an annual international photo contest, the results of which were announced late in the night of December 14.  The contest drew a staggering l2,45,000 entries from 54 countries, including 7,800 from India. Ten best photographs were selected from among the Indian entries. This included two pictures of Nimade – of world famous Sanchi stupas and Humayun’s Tomb.

The contest was organised by Wikimedia. Starting from the Netherlands in 2010, it was organised at European level in 2011 and global level in 2012. Wikimedia is the movement behind Wikipedia, internet’s most popular free-to-use and free-to-edit encyclopedia. Nimade, who was born at Indore and grew up in Bhopal, told Free Press, “It was a pleasant surprise. You can also say a shock. Even participating in an international contest was a big thing for me. I never expected that my pictures will figure in the top 10”.  And this is not the only feather in Nimade’s cap. He is also one of the winners of Chiiz Magazine Photography Award, 2017 organised by Chiiz Magazine of the USA.

“I clicked photograph of Humyun’s tomb using a Nikon D750 camera when I went Delhi to receive the (Chiiz) award. Around that time I heard about the contest and decided to enter it”, he said. Nimade has three cameras- two of Nikon make and one of Sony. He clicked the Sanchi picture by Nikon D5300. “After office, I spend an hour daily in reading whatever I can about world of photography on the net. On weekends and holidays, it is me and my camera and nothing else” he said.

He makes it a point to attend photography workshops to hone his skills. “I have attended a workshop of fashion photographer Dabboo Ratnani at Delhi. I took training from “Neerja” fame photographer Atul Kasbekar. I also got a chance to do photography in Kumbh, Ujjain under the guidance of eminent photographer Raghu Rai. I learned finer nuances of photography including compositions and angles from him. Whatever fame I have earned in the field is due to the guidance of my gurus. Also, the comments of people and critics on Facebook and Instagram inspired me a lot,” he says. Some of his photographs have been selected by UP Tourism for inclusion in the Incredible India booklet. Facebook has given him blue tick (verified profile) status.
