Bhopal: Alcohol, tobacco addiction a growing concern: Yoga Guru HR Nagendra

Bhopal: Expressing concerns over the growing menace of addiction to alcohol and tobacco products in the country, Yoga Guru HR Nagendra said that dependence on such substances has adversely affected mental and physical health of person and disturbed families in a multitude of ways — financially, emotionally and functionally.

Demanding a complete ban on these substances, the Yoga guru said, “I will suggest in the meeting to put total ban on addictive products including liquor, gutkha and cigarettes and bidis as these substances are making poor poorer and leading to cases of depression and suicides.” Not only liquor, all tobacco products and gutka should be banned, said guru Nagendra while talking to Free Press here on Friday. The yoga therapist was here to attend the first meeting of Rajya Anand Sansthan.

He said that addiction and suicide are closely linked. Mostly suicides occur when a person is in deep depression, first he or she is caught in the web of addiction and as a result loses confidence and all hope and thus take the extreme step, he said. I will ask in the meeting to think about banning all addictive substances in the state, guru Nagendra added.

Emphasising upon the benefits of practicing yoga for a healthy and balanced life, he said that that ‘Yoga brings positivity in life’ and the persons who are depressed, specially the farmers should do yoga every day. The yoga lesson will be incorporated in the school book, including NCERT and state boards, said the Yoga guru adding that a programme will be launched to promote yoga so that each and every child studying in school get to know about the importance of yoga in daily life. He also appreciated the exceptional work done by Baba Ramdev in promoting Yoga and Ayurveda.

Guru Nagendra said that with SRL company the world largest survey has been conducted and a new drug to control diabetes is under preparation and a declaration regarding it will be made soon. The drug will help millions of people around the world, he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has full control over his brain and mind; he can continuously work for hours without a break for he practises yoga every day for an hour, said guru Nagendra emphasising upon the importance of yoga in daily life.
