Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): AIIMS Bhopal has successfully performed its first robotic surgery in the orthopedic department.

This surgery, conducted on the spine, marks a major advancement in medical technology at the institute. AIIMS Bhopal Director, Dr. Ajai Singh, shared this information with the media on Saturday.

Robotic spine surgery offers several advantages over traditional methods. In normal spine surgery, doctors rely on CT scans, MRIs, and often have to adjust the patient’s position during the procedure.

However, in robotic surgery, everything remains in perfect alignment, making the process more precise and efficient.

The new robotic system also ensures smaller incisions, reducing pain and discomfort for patients. This is particularly beneficial for treating congenital spinal deformities, where large incisions are usually required in traditional surgeries.

AIIMS Bhopal has invested ₹20 crore to acquire this advanced robotic technology. The surgery takes around two hours, whereas traditional spine surgery can take up to four hours. Experts believe this will improve patient recovery times and overall outcomes.

In the coming years, AIIMS Bhopal plans to expand its robotic surgery program to include knee replacements. With this achievement, AIIMS Bhopal becomes the second AIIMS after Delhi to conduct robotic spine surgery.
