Sheopur (Madhya Pradesh): A 24-year-old prisoner escaped from Madhya Pradesh’s Sheopur District Jail by scaling a 22-foot-high wall with the help of a rope allegedly made by tying bedsheets together.
The incident occurred between 1 pm and 2 pm while an online training session on the Bhagavad Gita was being held for some prisoners. After the session ended, all inmates were instructed to return to their barracks.
However, prisoner Dharmendra Kushwaha did not return to his barrack. During a search, jail officials discovered that he had escaped from the premises.
According to officials, Dharmendra allegedly used the training period to tie bedsheets together and make a rope. He then reached the prison’s boundary wall and climbed over it.
Dharmendra, son of Surendra Kushwaha, is a resident of the Palaycha police station area.
He was sent to jail on May 31 in connection with a case registered at Karahal police station under Sections 137(2) and 87 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The jail administration immediately informed senior officials and Sheopur Superintendent of Police Moti-ur-Rehman.
Police teams subsequently launched a search operation in nearby areas and at places where the prisoner may be hiding.
The SP said police stations in neighbouring districts had also been alerted and efforts were underway to trace the prisoner.
The escape has raised serious questions about security arrangements at the district jail.
Officials are investigating how prisoners were monitored during the online session and how Dharmendra managed to prepare the rope and reach the boundary wall unnoticed.
The jail administration has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident.
