South Korea: Hyundai Motor, Kia, Mercedes-Benz Korea, and Tesla Korea have announced voluntary recalls for over 343,000 vehicles due to defective components, according to South Korea’s transport ministry.
The surge in recalls was largely attributed to manufacturing defects in several popular Hyundai and Kia models, with the latest figures surpassing the 1.69 million units recalled last year, the ministry said on Thursday.
Last year, the number of vehicles recalled in South Korea reached a record high, with 5.12 million units across 1,684 models recalled, as per the Korea Road Traffic Authority. Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp. accounted for 4.07 million of these recalls—approximately 79.2 per cent of the total.
According to information, Hyundai Motor will recall 141,125 units of two models, including the Porter II Electric, due to a battery sensor design flaw. An additional 19,830 units of the Nexo will be recalled to address a defect in the emergency light switch, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
Kia Corp. is recalling 89,598 units of the Sorento Hybrid and one other model due to a software issue. Mercedes-Benz Korea has initiated recalls for 4,068 units of two models, including the S580 4MATIC, to resolve an engine control unit software defect. Tesla Korea is addressing issues in 2,425 units of the Model Y and another model caused by software errors.
