Oh Dough: Getting Cookied with Ice-cream

With a menu so tempting, Oh Dough offers unique artisanal creations which we don’t come across quite often, says Oshin Fernandes.

When it may seem like Mumbai is cluttering up with unnecessary cupcake and dessert joints, a humble duo of siblings, Ritika, and, Pawan Chawla, knock the door of this heritage city with open arms to help us devour their batch of freshly baked cookies with and christened it as ‘Oh Dough’. This quaint little cookie café offers their treats to go with coffee or a range of artisanal ice-creams whatever you may prefer.

Started on the 6th of June, Oh Dough is a legit new favourite spot to hang out with your friends over Cookies and Coffee. Located in the Kala Ghoda, this place fits right in with the cultural vibrancy of its setting. With a rack of cookie tins, and, bread loaves opposite a chalkboard menu with their exquisite delights makes this place stand out more than the ordinary.

A rendezvous with Pawan who manages the smooth running of Oh Dough, says, “My sister who is a Chef from Le Cordon Bleu, London runs the show with me. We have worked on this project for two years and she is the nerve of our central kitchen, it’s all her concept.”

With a clock ticking within whisks and a wall that spells ‘I got baked in Bombay’, Oh Dough is the newly added sprinkle on sweet joints to relish this season. “The inspiration for I got baked in Bombay, is that although my sister was abroad studying how to bake cookies, her idea to put this in reality took birth in Bombay. We want people to walk in and reminisce about the times they’ve had in their early days being a part of this city.”

It has to be noted that Oh Dough specializes in only cookies and ice-creams. When asked why just stick to a shorter horizon, Pawan states, “My sister was always passionate about cookies as a kid and it is something that she loves making and loves eating. She started baking at home at an early age and hence decided to take it further.”

With a menu so tempting, Oh Dough offers unique artisanal creations which we don’t come across quite often. “We have a variety of cookies to choose from. I can’t really pick the best one, but we have something called the Chipzel which is a cookie made of potato chips, chocolate, coffee, and butterscotch, topped with a pretzel look alike. It has a good texture and different flavour that someone has probably not had.”

But since mainstream cookies include eggs, does Oh Dough have anything for the vegetarians? Well, apparently they do. “We have two eggless cookies; pistachio- white chocolate and triple chocolate as of now. But we are going to keep changing and add in more flavours for our eggless lovers.”

With a ‘short and sweet’ menu, Pawan says that “We are still trying to figure out which flavours people like more since we have just opened.”

Giving a hand at their cookie and ice-creams combo, Pawan suggested trying their Smoked Vanilla Ice-creams with Triple Chocolate Cookie. The best part about this combination is that, both the flavours stand out distinctively and do not overpower each other. The soft cookie breaks through easily as you spoon it out topped with soft ice-creams.

To cut some sweetness and trying something unique, they also have a colourful concoction of Pistachio cookies with a dollop of black sesame ice-creams. This may not be your regular pick when it comes to palatable flavour, however its nutty appeal and vibrant green colour will make you drool over with every bite.

Despite being a new place, Oh Dough has set a different standard when it comes to delivering classic food with a modern twist. You would think a modest cookie café would not give most dessert places a run for their money, but, take our word for it this one surely does!
