Bollywood filmmaker Ashwini Dhir's 18-year-old son, Jalaj Dhir, was killed in a major car crash in Mumbai in the wee hours of November 23. He was out with three of his friends in the car when it rammed into a divider on the Western Express Highway at Vile Parle.

Jalaj had set off on a late night drive from Bandra to Goregaon with his friends. One of them, identified as 18-year-old Sahil Mendha, was driving the car, and he was reportedly under the influence of alcohol. Mendha lost control of the vehicle near the Sahara Star Hotel and the car rammed straight into the divider between the service road and the bridge on the northbound side.

Jalaj, along with another friend, Sarth Kaushik (18), who were seated in the rear seat, died after they were taken to the hospital.

Based on the complaint of the fourth friend in the car, Jedan Jimmy (18), Mendha was arrested by the Mumbai Police and his blood samples have now been sent to identify the presence of alcohol in his system.

As per Jimmy's statement, he, along with Mendha, took a cab to Jalaj's residence in Goregaon East on November 22. After spending the afternoon there, the duo decided to visit their friend, Jia Mehta (18), in Andheri in the evening. They reached her place around 7:30 pm in an autorickshaw. It was at her place that Mendha consumed two pegs of vodka, while Jimmy drank one peg.

Jimmy and Mendha returned to Jalaj's house by 11 pm, and post midnight, Sarthak joined the trio at Jalaj's residence. After a couple of hours of playing video games, the four decided to go out on a drive to Bandra in Mendha's car, around 3:30 am.

While Jimmy initially drove the car, Mendha took over the wheel later, and they reached Bandra around 4:10 am. They then began their return journey and Mendha was driving at a speed of 120–150 km/h, as per Jimmy's statement.

Mendha got confused about the directions near Sahara Star Hotel and that is when he lost control of the car, and rammed straight into the divider. While Jimmy and Mendha sustained minor injuries, Jalaj and Sarthak were gravely injured.

Jimmy, with the help of two bystanders, rushed Jalaj to the trauma hospital, Jogeshwari East. Later, Jalaj was shifted to the Kokilaben Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

On the other hand, Mendha rushed Sarthak to Bhabha Hospital, Bandra West, where doctors declared him dead. Jimmy then filed a complaint with the police.
