Malayalam cinema bagged big mentions at the recently announced 69th National Film Awards, While Rojin Thomas-directorial Home bagged the coveted honour for the Best Malayalam Film, Nayattu starring Kunchako Boban, Joju George, Nimisha Sajayan won the award for the Best Screenplay, penned by Shahi Kabir.

Veteran actor Indrans, who plays the central lead in Home as Oliver, a doting father who feels the longing of his children, won the Special Mention for his stellar portrayal.

Producer Vijay Babu exclaimed his happiness in a press interview. He said, “It’s a huge honour for all of us who worked on this film during the challenging period of the pandemic. I want to dedicate this to all the Malayalis across the world. The joy is doubled with Indrans chettan getting the award too.”

The pandemic years witnessed some of Malayalam cinema's best content. While Malayalam film fans predicted the Best Actor win for Joju George for his revered performance in Nayattu, Allu Arjun clinched the tile fo his spectacular act in the Telugu film, Pushpa: The Rise.

Directed by Martin Prakkat, Nayattu dealt with three police officers on the run from political factions. How they surpass caste and religious differences to have each other's backs formed the crux of the film.

Malayalam cinema's big win at the National Film Awards also included the Best Debut Director for Vishnu Mohan for the Unni Mukundan-starrer Meppadiyan.

While Home and Meppadiyan are available on Amazon Prime Video, you can watch Nayattu on Netflix.

The winners of 69th edition of National Film Awards were announced on Thursday (August 24) at National Media Centre in New Delhi. The awards were given for the year 2021.
