Pune: A major tourism development plan worth Rs 67 crore has been announced for parts of the Pune Metropolitan Region. It aims to boost infrastructure, improve facilities, and create new job opportunities in rural and scenic areas.
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Bhosari MLA Mahesh Landge shared details of the plan on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. He said the project will cover Maval, Mulshi, and Haveli tehsils and will be implemented by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).
Landge said the initiative is being carried out under the leadership of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is also the ex officio chairman of PMRDA. He added that the Pune Metropolitan Region is moving towards sustainable development, with more ambitious projects planned in the future.
According to Landge, the project aims to make tourism in remote parts of the district easier and safer. He said tourists will benefit from better and cleaner facilities, while local residents will get employment opportunities through increased tourism activity.
The plan includes the development of a well-equipped chowpatty at Khadakwasla Dam. It also proposes beautification work and improved safety measures at Mulshi Lake.
Skywalk At Lonavala, Improvements In The Forts...
One of the key attractions under the project will be a grand skywalk at Lonavala. This project is expected to draw more visitors to the popular hill station.
Infrastructure improvements are also planned for major forts, including Rajmachi Fort, Lohagad Fort, and Tung Fort, to make access easier for tourists.
In addition, the plan includes development at religious sites and the setting up of sewage treatment plants (STPs) in 27 villages to support environmental protection and clean tourism.
Landge said the project reflects the continued trust of residents from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad and aligns with the vision of developing the region as a sustainable “growth hub".
‘Pune Has Potential’
Speaking to The Free Press Journal, a PMRDA official said, “The commissioner and senior officials think that Pune District has huge potential for tourism. However, currently this potential is not being used to its fullest.”
“Tourism is only famous in Lonavala and the surrounding areas of Maval tehsil, but there are so many spots in Maval, Mulshi and Haveli tehsils. More tourist spots are being planned to develop,” the official added.
